Microsoft Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 was Microsoft upgrade to original Xbox, and the first of the current generation consoles. Launching a good year before Sony’s much anticipated PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 astounded gamers with its hi resolution graphics and ability to take gaming to the next level. But what really stood out – and still does – is the online service: Xbox Live. This allowed gamers to maintain a public profile, where any achievements and game points could be displayed to the world.
With the ability to take on other gamers around the world, Xbox Live is still an amazing service, head and shoulders above Sony and Nintendo’s equivalent services.
There are currently two main versions of the Xbox 360 available, the Xbox 360 Arcade and the Xbox 360 Elite. Both have the same core hardware, but the Elite throws in a hard drive, HDMI cable and headset. The Arcade skimps on these, but benefits from a lower start-up cost. You will often see references to the Xbox 360 Premium; this was the top version until the Elite turned up, but has since been retired. There are also some stocks of various promotional or short lived edition of the console, such as the transparent green cased Halo Edition.
